We have been super blessed to have stayed pretty healthy this winter. Unfortunately it was bound to catch up to us and last Monday it did! Peyton woke up puking and downright miserable. We were quarentined hoping that no one else would get it, but assuming at least one of us would. It is nearly impossibile to keep your two year old away from your 4 month old - especially when he loves to play 'high in hole' hide and seek in her bed with her. He was sick Monday, super droopy Tuesday, sick again Wednesday, and back to droopy and GI issues Thursday and Friday.
Sadie woke up Thursday morning and threw up too many times to count throughout the day. She refused to eat - just had the yuckies and then fell asleep, woke up got sick, fell asleep. I had a root canal scheduled for 1 so Drew came home, said he could handle her, and off I went. That afternoon she was super lethargic and still refused to eat once I got home. ( I was hopeful she would breast feed even if she wouldn't take the bottle from Drew). Around 6 we decided to go ahead and take her to the ER because we had heard that dehydration could happen quick with little ones and her lethergy and lack of eating really concerned us.
She had some not fun x-rays, blood work, IV fluids, and urine samples drawn all which made her SCREAM! Turns out she was not quite dehydrated but it could become an issue quickly since she still wouldn't eat. She definitely had the stomach bug, and they also found out that she had a kidney infection. Since she wasn't eating she needed the fluids over night and an antibiodic. They also wanted to run a few more tests in the morning to see why our baby had a kidney infection. (It is really rare in babies under two)
She kept some of her food down the next day, but her body still wasn't doing what it needed to do so they wanted to give her another round of antibiodic through her IV Friday night, and keep the fluids going so we spent another night in the hospital. They also did an ultrasound of her kidneys and that came back negative for any causes of her kidney infection. Thank you Jesus for that!
Around 11 Friday night her arm with her IV swelled up really bad so they had to take it out. We were concerned she would have to get another one since she needed the antibiotic but they couldn't find a good vein with all of her rolls. :) So they gave her a shot and just monitored her through the night. She slept way better and kept her food down. Since she was already off the IV in the morning they went ahead and discharged her with an oral antibiotic.
Once her infection is gone, we will go to Brenner's Children's Hospital (part of Baptist Hospital in Winston- Salem) to get anothe rtest done to see if she has reflux in the kidneys. (I'm not good with all the medical jargon) If she does she will be on an antibiotic for a couple years where hopefully her body will outgrow the infections.
That's all we know for now, but I know some family was wanting the details. We are so gratful to have our baby home. This week has been rough but we are defintely glad to not be in the hospital. They are in the snotty nosed, super emotional and clingy stage of this nasty bug. Both kiddos have been waking up in the middle of the night. We think Peyton is cutting his 2 year moilars - either that or the fact he is in a big boy bed now is scaring him when he wakes up.
